Time
16 October · 14:30 - 17:00

LocationMatt and Phreds

More info
I Am Three - What we don't say - a feature length rockumentory, travelling across europe with Manchesters most extraordinary musical duo

Irv and Hughes have been performing together for two years, Hughes (aka bleeding hands), and Irv a straight edge punk, form two opposing forces in musical tact which collides in emphatic style to form "I Am Three". In mid may 2010 the band set off to conquer Europe on a road trip of insane prop...ortions.

'It's What We Don't Say' is a feature length Rockumentary of I Am Three's 2010 European Tour. Filmed in Manchester, London, Berlin, Krakow, Brussels & Dusseldorf, the camera tails the two musicians as they speed from country to country and includes full length live versions of nine songs. The road movie is interspersed with interviews and tour exploits. Bearing the same name as I Am Three's second album, the two will be release simultaneously on 1st October 2010.

In what sometimes seems like "Withnail and I meets top gear" this movie lets you experience first hand, the trials and tribulations that is an unsigned bands mission to perform in new pastures on zero budget. A true roller coaster of mind blowing performances, 1000's of miles of road, 100's of truckers, music, and art.

As well as live performance the movie is sound tracked also by " I Am Three's" new album, "what we don't say" their second studio album, the album promises to wean any disbelievers into suckling on the creative fountain of I Am Three. For fans who are familiar with I Am Three's material, this represents a giant leap forward from their debut Album "it's never too late" whilst maintaining their panache for the down right unusual, and total disregard for adherence to a genre. The songs are subtly tied together to create something contextual that works an entire album, a journey through sound played out on a sonic battlefield where tracks mix into each other like the paints of an artists palette, creating a colourful and beautiful kaleidoscope of Irv and Hughes personalities.

'What We Don't Say' movie and sound track will be released on 1st October 2010, celebrated by an Exclusive movie première 16th October 2010 - Matt and Phreds, Oldham Street Manchester

Interview with Mina Vigrad June 2010 Taken from FILMitU

Rockumentaries usually consist of montages of posing wannabe musicians talking about how great they are interspersed with theatrical gig footage and tedious crowd shots. Mina Vigrad's 'What We Don't Say,' a film chronicle of Manchester duo I Am Three's 2010 European tour breaks all these rules. We catch up with the producer/director and ask her about the release.

Q: How did the I Am Three film come about?

MV: Basically I saw them playing live a couple times and thought they'd make an interesting topic for a documentary film as they are great musicians but don't behave like your rock star wannabes. They are both really down to earth and have a blatant disregard for acting out any stage persona. Initially I intended on just filming a couple of their gigs dashed with a few interviews but when they said they had a European tour coming up I decided to capture that event instead.

Q: Were you present for the whole tour?

MV: I was there for most of the gigs and I gave them a camera to film the bits I missed.

Q: How much footage did you have to work with?

MV: There were about sixteen hours of raw footage, which isn't a lot when you consider this includes all the gigs themselves. It's very difficult trying to record the whole story though, a lot of important things happen when you aren't filming, there's so many things missing but I think the film is a good representation of what two weeks on the road with Irving and Hughes is like.

Q: This is the first film you've made, are you a film graduate?

MV: No, I've absolutely zero film making background, but I think we've all seen enough TV in our lives to know what works and what doesn't. While I was editing the scenes I would come across something that just didn't work and go in the opposite direction to avoid it. The guys gave me a stack of their music so I had a lot of musical backdrops to build footage over too. Some of the scenes, like the gigs, needed no editing others have literally hundreds of cuts in every minute.

Q: What did the band think when they saw the film, did they object to any of it?

MV: the first time they saw it was when I showed them the final edit, they both agreed it summed up the tour properly. Hughes was impressed that it managed to condense hundreds of hours into a few minutes. Irving was amazed that the shoddy footage they'd shot could be polished up to look good.

Q: Tech wise, what did you use to shoot and produce the film?

MV: The whole thing was an absolute zero budget. I know people often say that when they mean it was made for under £50k, but there was zero budget in this case, I tagged along with the band for the gigs at their expense in their car, shot it on a borrowed camera and edited it on hacked software. There are minimal effects or processes in the film, with the noticeable exception of the Ludlow footage which looked so terrible because it was a festival gig in a tent on a rainy grey day. I had to use some creative trickery because it was so unusable otherwise.

Q: Where can people see the film?

MV: I'm currently working with Hughes and Irving about this, they are going to play before or after the film at the initial UK screenings, which will probably be in cafes and bars across the country, so you'll get a gig and a film all in one.

Q: Do you intend on working with the band again in the future?

MV: I don't see why not, we had a bit of a laugh, if they ever want a video shooting I'll happily do it.

'What We Don't Say' will on limited release in the UK from September.

I Am Three's latest review!

coutesy of Manchester music

By Manuel Ecostos

Hughes and Irving are the duo behind the contradictorily named I Am Three. This relatively gargantuan collection of 20 tracks wrestles with acoustica, underground jazz and a bohemian, almost gypsy punk folk, sometimes hitting each flavour in succession, sometimes all at once. It's warmly recorded with a demo styled enthusiasm, bringing out a live perspective that still accommodates their combined, multi-instrumental talents. Often seen grappling an acoustic guitar and a double bass, this LP is their musical family album. There are soundbites and out-take sounds along the way, as well as genuinely funny moments, as we join them on a trip of busking that would be as entertaining in a box car as it would in an intimate café bar. Like their name, this duo add up to quite a bit more than the sum of their parts.

I Am Three return!!!

I Am Three returned triumphant from their second tour of Europe to a packed audience at The Cavendish Arms in London, etching out a set that was in more ways than one, was completely mind blowing.

Their two weeks of touring has solidified live performances of their newer songs, such as 'Watch Yer Back', 'No Other', and 'Madchester' which will be released later this year, as well as reworkings of past material; 'Drawn Again' now features a full compliment of backing vocals, and a host of newly honed riffs on classics such as 'Worth It'.

Hughes explains, "we played to such a vatiety of audiences, from a Chilled out Jazz club in Krakow, to an old skool rock venue in Berlin, we needed to adapt what we were playing to suit the environment, this means that a lot of our songs exist as living entities, there's maybe 3 or 4 versions of monkey phonics for example."

Where do they get their energy from, Irv quips "We've been drinking military strength energy drinks for two weeks, providing 8000% of our daily dosage of vitamin B12"

The tour was not without its drama, details of Polish arrests and German ambulance journeys will be fully chronicled in the tour Movie "Not what we say" which will be released in August this year and shown before/after future I Am Three gigs.

I Am Three would like to thank everyone who helped them on their journey, specifically the Irish continecy from Gernerator Hostel, Ali from Sazz n Jazz and the excellent sound engineers encountered all across Europe (but not the UK.)

I Am Three on Tour 7th May - 21st May 2010

As I Am Three prepare to embark on their 2nd Tour of Europe, we hope that you will join them in their big send off at the Road House, Manchester on the 7th May, as they set off on a mission to bring their rare acoustic styles to Latvian shores.

Some interesting facts about I Am Three's forthcoming tour:

Over the course of the fourteen day tour I Am Three will drive 4000 miles which is the same distance as Dallas to Alaska, or Manchester to Macclesfield 150 times.

In total, I Am three will be on the road for 62 hours, in this time Hughes will smoke approximately 247 rollies, and Irving will drink around 200 espresso's, filling approximately 30 plastic bottles with urine to save time when needing toilet breaks, or the same bottle 30 times.

Including all of their gigs, I Am Three will perform for around 20 hours, that's approximately 300 renditions of songs in total, to well over 2000 people in venues between Manchester and Latvia.

Irv will take about 20 rolls of film to photograph the events, that's nearly 480 photographs, Their camera guy will also film around 20 hours of footage for the forthcoming documentary film.

They are taking with them 600 cd EP and Albums. Over eleven gigs, they will have to sell 12 cd's per gig in order to pay for their petrol to get back to the UK

Although they will be taking 12 different set of stage clothes, Hughes is insisting he will only wear one pair of boxer shorts the entire journey.

I Am Three will be (hopefully) celebrating their return at the Cavendish in London 21st May.

We look forwards to seeing you on there!

Cheers

Andy

It's Never too late (Except When it is)

I Am Three today have submitted their debut album "It's Never too late (Except When it is)" to national radio!

here's is the bands own review of the album.

Artist: I Am Three
Web: http://www.iamthree.com/
Album: It’s Never Too Late (Except When It Is)
Genre: Rock
Related Artists: Frank Zappa, Beatles, Cardigans, 60's Girlie Groups, Stone Roses, super fury animals
Favourite Song(s): Older, History, Soldier, Famous,

Review:

I Am Three’s It’s Never too late (except when it is) is written performed and produced by Guitar and double bass combo Irving and Hughes,  It is an impressive self styled debut album that has a variety of influences oozing from every track, and with a growing fan base they look set for big things in 2010.

I Am Three’s music is full of inventive energy that is absent in so much of today’s releases, think, Zappa, Dylan, Beatles, and Garfunkel and you maybe getting close to the mark.

The album's vocal delivery bounces between Joe Cocker and Sixties girl group harmonies. The tempo and timbre of the songs likewise ricochets from the  raucous ‘History’ and ‘Older’, with an unexpected blistering guitar solo, to the serene ‘Soldier’ and ‘Famous’.

The musical palette of I Am Three is clearly extensive and the young, inventive band seems to have enough energy to take on all that is thrown at them with skill. Demonstrating a rang of styles from Bangra to Country and western, the album swings dynamically from the raw and aggressive to the slow and sublime, to take the listener on a journey of sound through time and space.

Many thanks!
